Hand thrown, small jug featuring Heavens Declare panel by May Morris - 1910-20
Embroidered panel, designed and worked by May Morris 1910-20
Just as her father had been, May was inspired to respond creatively to the Manor – ‘our beloved Oxfordshire home’ – and its setting. Plant and animal life local to Kelmscott appear in many of her designs. Here, the willow and elm are flanked by apple and rowan trees. Beneath them, a carpet of wildflowers that includes daisies, harebells, violets and gentians is enlivened by fluttering garden birds. Wildflowers were welcome features of the garden, growing side-by-side with more cultivated types of flowers such as hollyhocks and lilies. Each morning May picked blooms to decorate the rooms in the Manor. She was a very keen gardener for whom ‘necessary garden work’ formed part of every day.
